Kairgul is calmly awaiting the school bus. She would never suspect that the man hanging out on the curb harbors evil intentions, but a moment later he pushes her into a passing car and kidnaps her. "I don't want to be late for school," she shouts. "Your classes are over," he responds. In Kyrgyzstan, a former Soviet Republic, men abduct a bride if they are not rich enough to pay a dowry. About half of Kyrgyz marriages are affected by kidnappings, incidents that sometimes end tragically with a young woman's death.

Sister In Law
Kim Longinotto, Florence Ayisi/UK 2005 Documentary 106 minutes Color English (with English subtitles)
Sisters In Law is a captivating and often hilarious look at the justice system in a small town in Cameroon, where a progressive-minded female judge and lawyer forcefully intervene in cases of abuse toward women and children. It also offers a rare and positive glimpse of law being used to change patterns of social injustice. The three interwoven stories here are offered by the directors to counter prevailing stereotypes and make the point there is more to Africa than poverty, misery and injustice.
Until the Violence Stops (World VDAY)
Abby Epstein/USA 2003 Documentary 73 minutes Color English
In February of 2000, Abby Epstein became the Associate Director of Eve Ensler's Obie-winning Off Broadway play, The Vagina Monologues, going on to direct subsequent productions in Canada and Mexico. Through her work on the play and as Artistic Director of V-Day∂s Worldwide Campaign, Epstein learned about Ensler's V-Day movement to end violence against women and girls. V-Day originated out of Ensler's conversations with women who approached her after early performances of The Vagina Monologues, to tell her of their own experiences of violence. Ensler began to use performances of the play to raise funds for organizations working to stop violence. Epstein assisted Ensler on the biggest of these benefit performances at Madison Square Garden and soon began to witness firsthand that V-Day was quickly transforming into a worldwide social and activist movement. Epstein approached Ensler about making a documentary about the global impact of the movement in motion. She proposed filming several international communities who were holding V-Day events to capture the transformative energy of this play-turned-social movement. Epstein and Ensler∂s vision was that the film itself would become an educational and fundraising tool to end violence against women.
Epstein has been producing and directing theater internationally for the past twelve years. Broadway productions include Rent (National Tour, Mexico City, Barcelona) Off-Broadway, The Vagina Monologues (National Tour, Toronto, Mexico City,) Platonically Incorrect (New York, Los Angeles.)
